Dario Sattui Early Life and Education

Dario, born in 1941 in San Francisco and raised between San Francisco and Marin County, had the privilege of being immersed in a family legacy deeply rooted in winemaking.

Growing up, Dario found himself captivated by his great-grandfather’s tales and photographs detailing the rich history of the winery, which had persevered through the challenges of Prohibition, forcing its closure.

Vittorio’s stories painted a vivid picture of the winery’s legacy, leaving an indelible mark on Dario’s upbringing and fostering his admiration for the family’s winemaking heritage.

His early years were infused with these tales, shaping his passion and deep connection to the art of winemaking.

He kept this dream alive as he furthered his education, receiving a B.S. in Accounting and Finance from San Jose State University in 1965 and then an M.B.A. from University of California, Berkeley, in 1969.

Dario Sattui Castle

The building of the Castello di Amorosa winery started by Dario in 1994. His first plan was to build a building that was 8,500 square feet and didn’t have any basements.

But over time, the plan changed into a Tuscan castle from the 1400s. It’s 121,000 square feet (three acres) big, has 107 rooms, four levels below ground, and four levels above ground.

I used only old, hand-made materials and built the Castello using the same methods and materials that would have been used 700–800 years ago because I wanted it to be completely real.

Such a fake thing can’t exist. If you don’t do it right, people will know it’s not real.

To finish the castle, more than 8,000 tons of hand-chiselled local stone and almost a million old bricks from Europe were brought in.

Europe sent over 200 containers full of old materials and furniture to decorate the inside. The building process took 15 years, and it was finally open to the public on April 7, 2007.

It has a moat, a drawbridge, five towers, high defensive walls, gardens and loggias, a chapel, stables, an armory, and even a torture room.

Today, Castello di Amorosa is seen as a masterpiece of architecture. It has 107 rooms, and no two are the same.

Perhaps the finest vaulted wine vaults in the world can be found at Castello di Amorosa.

This is where Dario’s dream of making high-quality wines with the same care and love that went into constructing his castle came true.
